What is a quick loan?
A quick loan — also called a cash loan, instant loan, or short-term online loan — is a financial product designed to cover once-off liquidity needs. It has three defining features: a small to medium amount (typically R500 to R8 000), a fully online process with no physical paperwork, and fast approval and disbursement — in minutes, not days.
Unlike a traditional bank loan, you do not need to visit a branch, submit certified payslips, or wait for a risk committee to review your file over several weeks. Applicant profiles are assessed automatically, so the decision is fast without the usual delays of the traditional banking system.
When does a quick loan make sense? When an unexpected cost arises and waiting is not an option: a car breakdown, a medical bill, an urgent home repair, an airfare that needs booking before the price rises, or simply making it to month-end with peace of mind. It is not the right product for planned large expenses — for a home renovation, buying a car, or financing a course over several years, a personal loan with a longer term is more appropriate.
How to apply for a quick loan online
The entire process is online, fast, and typically takes just a few minutes from opening the page to receiving a decision. Here are the steps:
- Choose how much you need and how long to repay. Use the calculator at the top of this page to set the amount (R500 to R8 000) and see an estimated repayment before you start. No surprises: if your first loan qualifies for the 0% APR promotion, the figure shown is exactly what you will repay.
- Complete the online form. The form asks for your basic details: South African ID number or passport, contact information, employment status, income, and the bank account where you want the funds deposited. Everything is transmitted over a secure encrypted connection and your data is handled confidentially, in line with POPIA.
- Receive a fast decision. After submitting the form you receive a response quickly. If your application is approved, the loan agreement — including the amount, term, APR, and repayment schedule — will be sent to your email address for you to review carefully before signing.
- Sign the agreement online and receive your funds. If the terms suit you, sign electronically and, once everything is confirmed, the money is transferred to your specified account. The exact timing may depend on your bank’s processing schedule.
- Repay on the agreed date. The repayment is deducted automatically from your account on the date specified in your agreement. If for any reason you cannot meet the deadline, contact the lender in advance to arrange an extension.
If you have questions at any point, the support team is available by email and chat during business hours and will guide you through each step.
Amount, term, and APR: available options
The calculator above summarises the general terms available online. A few important details:
- Amount (R500 – R8 000): this is the standard range. For very small emergency amounts or larger personal loan needs, there are additional options that cover those ends of the spectrum.
- Repayment term (91 – 120 days): these are the standard terms for quick loans. For larger amounts with longer repayment periods (6, 12, or 24 months), personal loans are more appropriate and can also be compared online.
- APR (0% – 317%): the specific APR depends on the amount, term, and your applicant profile. The first loan, for new users within the applicable promotion, may be at 0% APR.
- No application fee: applying online costs nothing. The only cost is the interest and fees set out in the loan agreement, which are shown transparently in full before you sign.
Before signing, always review the agreement document — by law it must include the total amount repayable, the APR, the repayment schedule, and the conditions that apply in the event of non-payment.
Types of loans available online
Not all quick loans are the same. Depending on the amount, the term, your profile, and the purpose, there are different options. Online you can compare the main categories:
Small cash loans (R500 – R2 000)
These are the lowest-amount quick loans, designed for very specific emergencies: an unexpected utility bill, a bank charge, a last-minute expense. They are repaid over short periods — typically 91 to 120 days — and for new users the first one may be free (0% interest). This is the typical way to experience the service before applying for larger amounts.
Urgent / same-day loans
When the critical factor is not just the amount but the speed: you need the money quickly and cannot afford to wait. For this type of application the process is fully online and the decision is fast, so funds can be in your account without the delays of the traditional banking system.
Personal loans (R1 000 – R8 000 and above)
For larger needs and longer terms: a home improvement, a vehicle deposit, consolidating several debts, covering study fees, or funding a significant purchase. The process is slightly more involved than for a small cash loan because the amount warrants it, but it remains fully online.
Loans without a payslip / unsecured / for blacklisted applicants
If your employment situation does not fit the standard “salaried employee” profile, or if you have an adverse credit listing, you can still apply for finance online. Alternative documentation to demonstrate repayment ability is accepted: grant payment letters, bank statements, SARS assessment notices, or rental income records. See the “Special profiles” section below for more detail.
Loans by amount: from smallest to largest
Each amount addresses a different need. These are the most common amounts applied for through CreditGenius and the situations they typically cover:
- R500 — the starting amount. Useful for covering a small shortfall at month-end, an unexpected bank charge, or a minor once-off expense. Often the first loan for a new user, frequently at 0% APR.
- R750 – R1 000 — small emergencies: an unexpected electricity bill, a traffic fine, a minor appliance repair.
- R1 500 — one of the most popular amounts. Typically covers a well-defined medium expense: a dental appointment, an appliance replacement, a short-notice travel booking.
- R2 000 — slightly larger costs: a rental deposit, a course registration fee, an economy airfare.
- R2 500 – R3 000 — moving costs, out-of-pocket medical expenses not covered by medical aid, or consolidating a couple of small debts.
- R4 000 – R5 000 — more significant projects: partial home repairs, a professional short course, or covering several smaller outstanding amounts.
- R8 000 — the maximum quick loan amount. Suitable for a meaningful once-off expense where a quick turnaround matters and a personal loan term is too long.
Each amount has its own dedicated page with a preconfigured calculator, typical terms, and the conditions that best suit that amount.
Requirements to apply
The basic requirements to start your application through CreditGenius are:
- Age: 18 years or older. Some lenders require a minimum age of 21 for certain products.
- South African residency: you must have a residential address in South Africa.
- Valid identity document: a South African ID number or a valid passport.
- Bank account in your name: where funds will be deposited and repayments deducted. The account must be held with a South African bank.
- Active mobile number and email address: for receiving communication, notifications, and the electronic signature link.
- Demonstrable income: a payslip, invoices if self-employed, a pension statement, a social grant letter, or rental income. A conventional monthly payslip is not mandatory — alternative income sources are accepted.
Depending on the amount requested, additional documentation may be required: recent bank statements, a SARS tax assessment, or income proof. In all cases documents are uploaded digitally — nothing needs to be posted or delivered in person.
You do not need: a surety or guarantor, a property as collateral, or a visit to a physical branch. A high income is also not required — modest but stable income is assessed on its merits.
Special profiles: no payslip, unsecured, blacklisted
If your financial situation does not fit the standard profile, you can still apply for finance online. Some of the most common cases:
Without a conventional payslip. Self-employed people, freelancers, gig-economy workers, and anyone on a variable or project-based income: even without a fixed monthly payslip you can demonstrate income through bank statements, invoices, or a SARS return. These profiles are accepted and assessed using adapted scoring.
Unsecured / no surety. A surety is a personal guarantee where a third party agrees to repay the loan if you cannot. Most quick loans online — including those available through CreditGenius — do not require a surety, because the amount and term allow lenders to manage the risk without additional security. This applies generally for loans up to R8 000.
Blacklisted or under debt review. Having an adverse credit listing or being under debt review does not automatically disqualify you. Some lenders consider applicants in this situation, subject to their own criteria and the provisions of the National Credit Act. Note that terms (APR, maximum amount, repayment period) are typically less favourable than for applicants with a clean credit record.
Pensioners and social grant recipients. A SASSA old-age pension, disability grant, child support grant, or similar regular income is an accepted income source. The amount and regularity of payments determine the maximum loan amount you may qualify for.
Minimal paperwork. In many cases only your ID and banking details are needed, with no additional documentation required. This is the fastest route and is best suited to smaller loan amounts over short terms.
If your situation does not fit neatly into any of the above, you can indicate this in your application and it will be assessed on the basis of your demonstrable income.
